Sheffield Hallam University. Materials and Engineering Research Institute PhD scholarships


As part of our strategic plan to invest in high-achieving students, integrate research with teaching and increase engagement with business, the professions and other partners, we are offering two types of University funded PhD scholarships:

1) Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) PhD Scholarship
These scholarships will be awarded by the Faculty of Arts, Computing, Engineering and Sciences and offer the opportunity to do PhD research at the same time as gaining experience in university teaching. Students holding GTA scholarships will work for an average of 6 hours per week on teaching related activities alongside colleagues in one of the faculty's four Departments: Media Arts and Communication; Computing; Art and Design; or Engineering and Mathematics.

2) Vice Chancellor's Scholarships
These prestigious scholarships will be awarded by Sheffield Hallam University's Vice Chancellor to high-achieving students whose research interests align with the University's strategic goals.

Both scholarship types include full-time Home/EU tuition fees and a maintenance bursary for three years of full time study, commencing September 2014. The maintenance bursary will be paid at the RCUK national rate (£13,863 for 2014/15).

Eligibility:

1) Scholarships in this discipline are open to Home/EU and International applicants. However, the scholarships will not include the shortfall between International and home/EU fee levels (approx. £10,000 per year) and another funding source will need to be identified by International applicants to cover this.

2) All applicants should hold a strong undergraduate degree (2:1 or better) or a relevant Masters qualification (or expectation of same)

3) While teaching experience is desirable for GTA applicants, all successful candidates will have the opportunity to develop their Higher Education teaching skills through training, practice and mentorship.

4) Currently-enrolled MERI students are not eligible for these schemes.

Perfil Técnico I+D

Beca Thin Film Abengoa Solar

Abengoa Solar, cuyo objetivo es desarrollar y aplicar tecnologías de energía solar para luchar contra el cambio climático y asegurar un desarrollo sostenible mediante tecnologías propias, tanto termosolares como fotovoltaicas, necesita incorporar a un/a Becario/a para el departamento de I+D FV (Thin Film).

  • Tareas: apoyo en actividades I+D relacionadas con tratamientos térmicos y caracterización de semiconductores.
  • Formación: Licenciatura/Grado en Ciencias Físicas, con conocimientos de materiales, óptica, tratamientos térmicos y entornos de simulación.
  • Observaciones: en el caso de que Ingeniería de Materiales sea un segundo ciclo deberá provenir el candidato desde titulaciones científicas (Química, Física, etc.).
  • Experiencia: no requerida. Se valorara estancias en grupos de investigación de la Universidad como alumno interno durante los años de estudio.

Post -doctoral fellow in TEM Microscopy

 

The Advanced Laboratory for Nanoscopies and Sectroscopies (LANE) is supporting candidates for the Ramón y Cajal (5 years financed) call. More information on:

  • The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop his/her work within the LANE laboratory using a new TECNAI F30 (300kV) microscope equipped with STEM, HAADF, EDX (INCA Energy XMax80), GIF Quantum SE and tomography holder and software. Materials under investigation are related to the two main research lines:
    1- Development of nanostructured coatings, thin films and nanoparticles based on the “magnetron sputtering” technology.
    2- Materials and catalysts for production, storage and use of hydrogen. A preliminary contact to the laboratory is needed to study the possibilities of developing the project in the laboratory. Profile:

  • PhD in Physics, Chemistry or Material Science. Experience in advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques: HRTEM, STEM, HAADF, Energy filtered TEM, EELS, EDX mapping and analysis applied to Materials Science and Nanotechnology.

Specialized technician in electron microscopy instrumentation

 

The Advanced Laboratory for the Nano-Analysis of Novel Functional Materials is offering a position as Specialized Technician in Electron Microscopy Instrumentation.

Tasks:

  • Maintenance, control, alignment, calibration of the instrumentation in the electron microscopy laboratories. Technical support and maintenance on vacuum equipment and other scientific instrumentation.
  • Basic operation of the microscopes for recording of images and spectra.

Profile:

  • Electronic engineer,  Physics, Chemistry or Materials science degree, chemical analysis technician or electronic technician. (Salary will be determined according to the candidate academic qualifications).
  • Experience in scientific instrumentation maintenance and development of small devices.
  • Experience in electron microscopy instrumentation: Maintenance and operation.
  • Knowledge on TEM sample preparation and instrumentation.
  • Capacity to write scientific reports.
  • High command in English is mandatory.

The position will be open until an adequate candidate will be hired.

PhD position: Electron holography of quasi-periodic nanomagnet array

 

A PhD studentship is available in Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany to study magnetic fields in nanomagnet arrays using the techniques of electron holography and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy. This is a joint project of the Theoretical Nanoelectronics Institute (PGI-2) and the Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons (ER-C), where the work will be carried out. The student will be formally registered at RWTH Aachen University during the project.

Background

The aim of the project is to study magnetic remanent states and switching mechanisms in quasi­periodic arrays of nanomagnets. The magnets will be arranged in quasicrystalline tilings and lattices that have different degrees of disorder. Such arrays are interesting because they are model systems for understanding frustrated magnetic spins in materials on the atomic scale. The quasicrystalline tilings, in particular, will be used to understand the effect of short and long range structural order and symmetry on magnetic order. This information is important to understand whether long-range magnetic order can exist in quasicrystals.

Tasks

The student will develop and apply the techniques of off-axis electron holography and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy to perform unique experimental measurements of magnetic fields in arrays of nanomagnets that are between a few tens and a few hundreds of nm in size. The samples will be patterned lithographically by collaborators from the University of Hamburg and the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. Parameters that will be varied include the shapes of the magnetic elements, their spacings and their arrangements. The magnetic signals will be correlated with structural and conpositional information recorded from the same samples using aberration­corrected transmission electron microscopy. The project will require the development of experimental electron-optical techniques and software for image analysis and simulation.

Requirements

Suitable candidates should have a university degree and a strong background in solid state physics or a related discipline. The candidate should be fluent in English and interested in working in an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists.

PhD position: Inverse modeling of magnetic fields in nanocrystals

 

A PhD studentship is available immediately in Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany to develop computational methods for the reconstruction of magnetic fields in nansocale materials and devices with nanometre spatial resolution. This is a joint project of the Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons (ER-C) and the Institute of Energy and Climate Research -Stratosphere (IEK-7).

Background

The aim of the project is to measure the three-dimensional distribution of magnetization inside an individual nanometre-sized magnetic crystal from a series of images acquired using the technique of electron holography. Nanoscale magnetic materials are of immense importance in scientific and technological disciplines. The project promises to provide a powerful new analytical tool at the frontiers of the highest spatial resolution analysis of spin and electronic structures that will have far­reaching impact beyond a specific research domain.

Tasks

The student will develop a novel model-based inversion algorithm, which will be used to find the best-fitting distribution of magnetic moments in a specimen that is consistent with a series of experimental phase images acquired using electron holography. As this is an ill-posed problem, the sensitivity of the solution to errors in the data, the uniqueness of the result and the use of prior information will need to be addressed. The algorithm will be applied to experimental measurements acquired using a state-of-the-art transmission electron microscope available in the ER-C, beginning with simpler two-dimensional problems. The ultimate aim will be to provide quantitative measurements of three-dimensional internal magnetic fields in nanoparticles.

Requirements

Suitable candidates should have a university degree and a strong background in computional mathematics or physics. The candidate should be fluent in English and interested in working in an interdisciplinary and international team of scientists.
