The CSIC is the largest public research body in Spain, and plays an active role in the scientific policy of all the country’s autonomous regions. It has a staff of more than 10,000 employees, among them 3202 scientists and about 3802 pre- and post-doctoral researchers. The CSIC has 116 Institutes or centres distributed throughout Spain. The Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Sevilla (ICMS) is integrated in the Research Centre of Excellence “Isla de la Cartuja” and is the reference point for Materials Science research in Andalusia, the southernmost region of Spain. The Centre is funded bythe Spanish Research Council (CSIC), the University of Seville (US) and the regional government of Andalusia (JA), and is equipped with very modern common services.
The ICMS was created in June 1986 as part of a Materials Science programme of the CSIC, based on the Coordinated Centre “Physical and Chemical Research Department” set up between the CSIC and the Inorganic Chemistry and Condensed Matter Physics Departments of the US.
